Funding your shed

Men’s Sheds have had a proven impact on the health and wellbeing of older men and their communities for decades; either as members of a Men’s Shed or as beneficiaries of community projects undertaken by Sheds. Men’s Sheds Canada is focused on growing the Shedding community in Canada and, in partnership with our Provincial Shed Association partners, assuring that Sheds have the support they need to become sustainable.

One of the services we provide nationally is a suite of grants to help Sheds get started, to build their capacities and to create valuable community connections.

Below are draft descriptions and criteria for each type of grant – we are still finalizing the details. (7 July 2024)

If you are interested in applying for one of these grants contact Brian Sawyer, MSC Operations Manager at brian.s@mensshedscanada.org for further information.

1. MSC Start-Up Grant – up to $1,000

Your application will also serve to connect you with a growing community of Sheds across the country supported by Men’s Sheds Canada.

Eligible expenditures for this granting stream include marketing and promotions, room rentals and catering for meetings, purchase of basic supplies, insurance, incorporation Fees. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. A decision on the application will be made within one month of submission.

2. MSC Capacity Building Grant – up to $10,000
There are many challenges along the path to getting a Shed established and self-supporting. The Capacity Building Grant is designed to help a growing Shed in their efforts towards sustainability – a one-time investment. The Shed must demonstrate a history of success and have a viable financial plan that involves revenue streams other than MSC.

Eligible expenditures:
every Shed has a unique set of goals, objectives, resources and needs. Your application for support may include IT software/hardware, marketing and promotion materials, basic tools and supplies, specialized equipment, safety supplies/equipment, insurance, incorporation fees, training or other professional services, short term operating expenses. A decision on the application will normally be made within one month of submission.

Eligibility to apply: Available for Sheds that have been established for at least 6 months, with regular member attendance of 6+ men. The Shed must be an MSC member (or apply to be one) and be willing to supply details of member numbers, fees, activities, and community engagement efforts. The Shed must demonstrate a commitment to their continued success with a clear plan of how the grant will contribute to their financial sustainability. The Shed must be self-managed and independent (not sponsored – our grants are not intended to subsidize sponsors’ program costs). Shed Applicants from across Canada are encouraged to apply. Sheds must have achieved society/association status or must demonstrate their intention to incorporate during the grant period.

3. MSC Community Connections Grant – up to $10,000
Men’s Sheds Canada is committed to supporting the Men’s Shed movement in Canada by providing grants that empower your Shed to make a positive impact in your community. By working with a local partner on a joint project, such as a charity, NFP, municipality, school group, your Shed will fulfill a well-defined community need and that aligns with the stated purpose of your Shed. Your Shed will play a key leadership role in the project development and your members will be actively involved in project delivery. The mutually beneficial outcomes will increase your Shed’s visibility to other local stakeholders and the community at large, with the hopes that this increased visibility will support the long-term sustainability of your Shed. Your Shed will demonstrate a history of success in similar work.

Eligible expenditures: Eligible expenses covered by this grant include project supplies, equipment, travel expenses, training, refreshments, and other costs directly related to project delivery.
